The easiest way to configure an internet connection with a Netgear router is to purchase a Netgear router with a built in ADSL Modem assuming you connect using ADSL. If you have a cable connection see here.
For this guide we will be configuring a Netgear DG834G router to connect to the internet.

Connect your Netgear to your telephone line via a filter using an RJ11 cable ( this will come included ). Then connect your PC/Laptop to any of the ports labelled 1 - 4 on the back of the router with the Ethernet cable ( also supplied usually coloured yellow ).

Next open a browser window and browse to the routers IP address which should be http://192.168.0.1 and you should then be prompted for a username and password. If not see here for troubleshooting.

The default username should be admin and the default password should be password.

 

Select basic settings on the left and you will be presented with the below menu. You will now need your particular settings from your ISP. For this guide we are assuming your broadband is ADSL or ADSL2+. Your settings will be similar to:
