Broadband Speed Test

Speedtest.net Mini requires at least version 8 of Flash. Please update your client.

About the speed tester
Above is a free tool courtesy of speedtest.net which shows the speed of your broadband connection giving you a reading for both upload and download.

Using the speed tester
Before running the speed tester please ensure that only this PC you are currently using is connected to the internet, if this is not possible then please note that the results may not be entirely accurate as other internet activity may be occurring at the time of testing.

To begin select "begin test", the test will take approximately 20 seconds to complete and will give you readings for both download and upload connection rates. I would recommend performing the test three times, once in the morning, once in the afternoon and once in the evening. This will give you an overall average.

Not getting your advertised speed?
Today most ISPs offer speeds at up to 20Mb. Please note though that this speed is very rarely achieved. There are many factors which may affect your broadband speed but the main one is how far you reside from your local telephone exchange, if you have an ADSL connection over copper wire then the further you are from the exchange the slower your speed will be. Your ISP may also invoke traffic management, i.e. prioritising traffic so email and web browsing is preferred over streaming radio during peak hours.

How can I increase my speed?
Talk to your ISP, there may be a fault on your line, if not they will offer you advice on how to optimize your connection. An alternative provider offering a fibre optic connection may be your only other choice.
